Some Thoughts this 4th of July

July 4, 2012

Last night, Ryan and I joined some of our dear friends at Fletcher Park in Mt. Zion to watch the fireworks. It was fun watching all the kids running around with glow sticks and other fun light up toys. Of course everyone was anxiously awaiting the beginning of the firework show and Ryan and I were no different. As the first few fireworks lit up the sky, I was reminded of when I was young and the fun that I had each year with my cousins on the 4th of July. But after that initial nostalgic moment, as the smoke from the previous fireworks continued to linger in the air, the real reason for this holiday was brought to mind.

Sometimes I feel we too easily forget what we are celebrating. Yes we’re celebrating our independence day, America’s birthday if you will. But when I saw those fireworks exploding in the sky last night I was suddenly reminded of what it took for us to declare that independence. The whole reason for these fireworks shows is to reminded us of the bombs that ripped through the air while we waged war against the British to finally claim our independence and freedom.

Do I believe this country is great? Absolutely! I truly believe our country is amazing. Sure we have our issues (just like every other country) and it may be that in the future a new war will arise to try and reclaim some of our freedoms and release this growing government control. But I still believe enough in our country to be willing to fight for it and for what I believe in – and that’s what makes America great!

I hope you all are having an awesome 4th of July this Wednesday! Go out, have some fun, and beat this heat! 🙂
