Planning Your Session: Location, Location, Location!

Location Location Location

I thought it was time we talked about your session location a little bit. I realized I’m always sharing tips on what to wear but your location can be a pretty important piece of your session puzzle too! And the great thing is there are a ton of different options for you to choose from! You could use downtown spaces for a more urban and architectural look. You could go to a park or wooded area for something with more green and color. You could even do your backyard or something totally unique to you! So let’s take a peek at some ideas!

Downtown
So what you’ll notice here is that most of these are of seniors I’ve worked with. Most of my families have opted for more nature based locations for their sessions – but downtown can absolutely be awesome option for you too. We’ve got old brick walls just with the brick and cool doors or covered in ivy. We’ve got fun alleys, brick paved roads, and of course central park to give you plenty of variety. And just because we’re downtown doesn’t mean we can’t create something fun and epic too!

The Lake
The lake is another fun place for me. I’ve done a little bit of everything at the lake: families, beloved sessions, seniors, and even maternity sessions! There’s something calming and peaceful about the lake and it makes it a great option I think for those who love the water or are just a little nervous about having their picture taken. Plus when the sun starts to set – we get some awesome color and light too!

Park
Parks are kind of the go to around here because we have so many of them! There’s Rock Springs and Fairview and Forsyth and Spitler and Fletcher and more! Parks can also give you some variety – they’ll have wooded areas, grassy areas, trails, and often a pond or two. I would say the bulk of my sessions occur at parks and I’m always doing my darnedest to take those popular places and make them look and feel unique for you!

Your Backyard!
Sometimes this option gets over looked but I think it can be a really special choice! Maybe it’s your first home. Maybe it’s where you’re hosting a big family reunion. Maybe you want to document your family in the home you’re in right now. Or maybe you just have an awesome yard. Capturing portraits in your own backyard can add an even more personal touch to images that showcase the ones you love!

Something Completely Different
And of course there are plenty of other locations unique to you that we can do too! I’ve photographed in fire stations, gymnasiums, football fields, tree farms, museums, and more! If you have an idea of a way to make your session unique to you – let’s do it! Let’s create something fun, epic and totally you together!

So I hope this gave you some fun ideas on ways you can add even more of yourself and family into your portraits. You can go as simple or different as you want. Obviously the most important part is capturing who you are and preserving your family and loved ones in photographs you’ll be able to cherish for years to come!
