From the Storm…

July 26, 2010
If you were wondering at my absence last week, I do have a very good reason. 🙂
We actually had a tornado blow through Sullivan last week. There was some terrible damage around town. Many power lines were down in town and even out to the country. I was at the library in town when it hit and it took me an hour to find a way home through all the debri, damage, and power line issues. Power was down for a couple days.
But in spite of all the problems, I was reminded of why I love living in such a small town. Not even fifteen minutes after the storm had left. All kinds of people (ordinary citizens) were out in the streets directing traffic around the power lines and fallen trees. And as people began cleaning up their yards the next day, it was wonderful to see how everyone was helping everyone else. Big cities just aren’t like that. People are so focused on their own affairs they don’t  have time to stop and concern themselves with others.
I love this about my town. I love the simplicity, and the slow pace of life here. And I love the concern everyone shows for each other. It’s the way I have always tried to live my life and it’s nice to be surrounded by like minded people.
Here’s some quick pics of the damage at our house and in town.
Back porch and all the leaves that got blown off the trees

Close up of the power line that came down in our yard

Power line

This branch came down on the roof over the laundry room

The wind blew so hard it warped our barn. Here you can see it pushed in on the sliding bay door. The only thing that stopped it was the old car sitting just inside. The door is pressed up against it’s bumper.

Here you can see the back wall of the barn…it’s not exactly straight. 😉

Here you can see just how far it’s blown out…This was taken straight on looking at the barn

Here’s our power line. It landed on the neighbors truck.

The pole hit the hood so hard it popped that side door open.

There used to be a fence here.

There’s part of it.

This is an inside view of the back wall of the barn

The laundry room window has a lovely crack now.

Another picture of the power line

Our air conditioner got blown away from the house some too.

This is downtown Sullivan. The roof of that far building got ripped off and bashed into…

These two buildings.
