The Power of the Macro

July 19, 2010
Back in May I did some senior photos for a handsome young man over in St. Louis. I was blessed to meet his mother who happens to makes some absolutely amazing jewelry. I kid you not – her creations look like something you would buy at a high end store. They are gorgeous! But she mentioned that she would love to put together a catalog of her pieces to be able to pass out or show to potential buyers. I thought this was a fabulous idea and I was thrilled when she asked me if I would be interested.
So when I got the money together I invested in a new lens to help me better show off her work: the Canon 100mm Macro Lens. In case you don’t know this about me…I get very excited when I get new equipment. So the minute I got home I had to test it out to see what it could do. I have to admit I was pretty giddy for the rest of the afternoon and so I thought I’d share some pictures with you so you could see too.
Size 5 Ring from Target…You can see all the detail in the wire
Here’s another view of the same ring even closer

This one shows the shallow depth of field. You can see how only a very select area is in focus in this picture.

Not only can you see the nicks in my size 4.5 wedding band, but you can see the fuzz caught on the diamond.
This photo is of my phone with my standard lens…then…
This is of the same phone with my macro lens. Again you can see the shallow depth of field.
I just love this little sculpture, but you can see how the background is soft focused.
I figured this would give a real concept of it’s abilities. Here’s a dime’s face. (Don’t you love the deep gouges in my wood floor…that’s what you get when you have a very excitable puppy.)
If that last one didn’t do it for you – check this out. You can easily see the ridges on the side of the dime.

Well there you have it. Some sample photos of what the lovely 100mm Macro lens can do! 🙂
