The Value of a Professional Photographer

Value of Professional Photographer

It seems about once every couple of months, I have a new client call or come in for their consultation and hear about a prior experience with a photographer that was less than they expected. Either the quality of the photographs was poor or the service was sub par or the photographer was unprofessional. Whatever the case may be – it breaks my heart to hear these lovely people tell me stories of lost wedding photos, ruined newborn portraits, or poorly shot family portraits. I truly understand how important each of those moments are and once they’re gone – there’s no getting them back. That’s why it’s so so SO important to make sure you’re hiring a professional.

Value of Professional Photographer

So what are some signs that you are hiring a professional for your photography needs?

1) In-Person Meeting
I honestly believe that the best photographers take the time to get to know their clients. It’s so much easier to capture a family’s relationships and personalities if you know a little about them first. Whether that’s through a phone call or an in-person consultation, meeting with the photographer beforehand is a sure sign that they are interested in you. This also provides you with the perfect opportunity for you to get to know them. Being comfortable with your photographer and trusting him/her is so important for ensuring real smiles and relaxed portraits that really represent you and your family.

2) Samples of Artwork
A professional will always have samples of their artwork available for you to see. Whether it’s albums, wall art or custom portrait pieces, a professional photographer always wants their clients to see the possibilities for their portrait art! I know that I, myself, prefer to see something in person – to be able to touch it and hold it – before I purchase it. And business owners, photographers included, know that too!

3) Professional Marketing Pieces
This may not seem like a big sign but the quality of the photographer’s marketing pieces can say a lot about the business you’re working with. Postcards, websites, business cards, posters – the professional puts a great deal of thought, time, and investment into these things. They want them to reflect their business and they know that in some cases it may be your first impression of them – so quality is certainly important. A newer, inexperienced photographer may have fliers printed on colored printer paper, designed in word and using clip art. We all have to start somewhere, but if you’re wanting to ensure you are getting professional work – these pieces can help you tell if you are working with a professional

4) Community Involvement
Most photographers have a strong desire to give back. I think photographers by nature tend to be generous people so you’ll see professional photographers donating to auctions and charities. I, myself, donate to at least three auctions each year, and they are always for organizations I care about. Professional photographers will donate their time and talents to causes they believe in. They’ll be involved in the arts in their area and want to help bring the industry up by being members of organizations like PPA or other local groups for professionals, like our local group, CILPP.

5) Protection
One of the great things about a professional is that they will have insurance to protect both themselves and you. If they’re equipment fails or has an issue both you and they are covered. This a great thing because it means your photographer is making sure you and your purchase will be safe.

6) Their Price will Reflect Their Work
Now I’m sure some people will look down on this tip, but I’m a big believer in it. Have you ever bought a knock off version of something only to have it break after a few uses or a couple months? I know I’ve had this happen in the past. I truly believe you get what you pay for. Yes – bargains and deals are awesome – but when it’s something important to me or something I want to last a long time – I will always be open to investing more for the sake of quality and professionalism.

I hope that you find these tips helpful when you’re looking for your next photographer (and if I get to be your photographer – I would be SO thrilled!). I’m really proud to be a part of this growing industry. And while it is a difficult and competitive field at times, I know that if I just continue to improve myself and what I do and provide exceptional service to my clients – I will hopefully be here for years to come! Yes – I (and my fellow professional photographer friends) may cost more than your friend or the lady down the street, but we can give you peace of mind, beautiful high quality portraits, and professional service time and time again!
