I was having a lovely conversation with a beautiful young woman the other day. We were in the middle of her consultation and discussing her session hopes, budget, and product desires. While we were talking, she mentioned that she wasn’t just looking for a photographer – she was looking for HER photographer… a photographer that she would go to with her family every year. And while we talked, I got the immense pleasure of hearing a woman share exactly what I hope families will find with me as their photographer – so I wanted to share that with you.

There are a really great benefits from choosing one photographer to be YOUR photographer. One of the first benefits is that you know what to expect. You know who you are working with. You know that photographer’s personality and, hopefully, you’re comfortable with him or her. You know your photographer’s process. You know how they’re going to shoot, how long it will take to see your pictures, how you’ll receive your products. You know that photographer’s style and what kind of images and products you will get. Every photographer is different, with different strengths and offerings – so when you have one photographer – you know what you’ll be receiving.

Another fantastic benefit of having a SINGLE photographer for your family is that they know you! You don’t have to reintroduce your family to someone new. Your kids don’t have to adjust to a new photographer every year. I love that the families who come back to me year after year – their kids enjoy having their photos taken with me. And truly – I love these families! I love watching them grow! And I feel that my work benefits from knowing these families well – from knowing who they are and how they interact. It is my honor and privilege to get to capture these memories for these amazing families year after year and preserve them in treasured images.

This may not seem like a big deal but consistency can be a huge benefit to having ONE photographer as well. Now, when I talk about consistency I mean a couple of things. First – consistency in style. Using the same photographer every year means that your images will always look like they go together. If you create a wall collage of images of your family throughout the years – every image will seamlessly flow together. Whereas if you have photographs from different photographers – they may not look good together on your walls. The other way consistency can come into play is that YOUR photographer will know what you’ve ordered in the past. So for each new high school senior – YOUR photographer will easily be able to create the same collages, groupings or albums with a similar style.

I know to some of you, it may not seem like a big deal to have a single photographer who is YOUR photographer. But I can tell you that for myself – I do see the value in this. Until this year – Ryan and I had utilized the same photographer for our family (of 2 plus the pups) photos. This was super nice because you gain a level of trust with your photographer, a level of comfort, a level of understanding. With our circumstances surrounding adopting (and our photographer has shifted her focus) – we find ourselves in a state of flux which means we are searching for our “new” photographer. And I can tell you – I’m looking forward to finding OUR photographer – someone we can trust and rely on to capture these moments of our family we will cherish forever.
