Last week on Thursday I had the amazing privilege of speaking to a local photography group – the Decatur Camera Club. You may recall earlier this year, I was invited to be a guest judge for their print competition at the Macon County Fair. It was a wonderful experience meeting the photographers and looking at their photographs with Ed. So when Curt emailed me asking if I’d be available to speak to the group, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to visit with them again.

At this point in my career, there’s a pretty wide range of things I could speak about so I asked Curt what the group was most interested in. And the topic of lighting was the first that came to everyone’s mind. Which is perfect because you guys all know how passionate I am about lighting since I’ve written multiple posts about it here on the journal. My one concern with speaking is that I have a tendency to get nervous and ramble or lose my thoughts… So I took some time to create some slides to help keep me on track.

I have always found visuals to be a perfect way to illustrate what you are trying to convey. So in addition to my information slides, I gathered a variety of images (past and present). I showed everything from natural light to off camera flash, and I showed a variety of images side by side so that I could visually show what the difference a pop of light might make between two shots on the same day in the same location.

I ended my presentation with sharing my composite work with group too. I’m always curious how my self portrait work and Your Story Project will be received. But everyone was super interested, attentive and had some really awesome questions! I really had a blast visiting with all these amazing men and women. They were so warm and inviting and I couldn’t have asked for a better group to speak to.
