New Fine Art Piece: Loss
It’s time to share another fine art piece with all of you. I’ve been holding onto this one for a little bit because it’s very precious to me. It has great depth for me personally whether it speaks to anyone else or not. This is another piece that is a part of the self-portrait series that I’m calling The Journey. The series deals with emotions or traits like hope, strength, anger, sorrow, etc… The many fragments that comprise the whole of a person. And for me, many of these are directly linked to our journey through infertility, miscarriage, and adoption. You can take a peek at all my fine art work features here.
The idea for this Fine Art piece is Loss… Let’s be real – loss is such a painful thing and can be really hard to talk about. In general, people don’t like dealing with those in pain. It’s uncomfortable. So we try to rush people through it, push them towards happy or hopeful thoughts. And sometimes we just need space to grieve. To process our reality, our heartache, our loss. As with most of the pieces in this series, this image is obviously tied into our journey to grow our family. So the loss represented here is specific to that. For me, I easily could have had dozens – almost hundreds of flowers around me – representing each month of failed pregnancy – each month of a child I dreamed of that was never born. Instead, I chose to focus on the three tangible loves lost in our journey and used the shiny red fabric to convey that idea of pain, bleeding, etc. I hope to soon muster up the courage to share the full story connected to this image. But I’m not quite there yet.
For the creation of this image, I simply set it up in our front room. I used one of my BoxDrops by SJP backdrops (which are my absolute favorites) and laid it out on the floor. Because I didn’t have a way to set up the camera high enough for this one – I got everything all set up and then utilized my hubby who stood on a chair to take the pictures. I wrapped my body in black lace to create a sort of dark bodice and then used a piece of green satin fabric for the flowing material.
Once we felt like we got everything we needed, the compositing began. I put together another behind the scenes video for you guys on my YouTube channel too! I forgot to screen record this one so I actually walked through the piece layer by layer to show you exactly how I built it. You can check it out below
And here’s the completed piece
I actually truly love this piece! It turned out exactly as I envisioned it and I could not have been happier with how it turned out.
