Fine Art Series: The Journey | Emptiness

Fine Art Series: The Journey | Emptiness

I know the last fine art piece I shared with you guys showed the completion of our journey and thus the end of the series. However, I still have a lot of ideas on file for images for the series and I plan to continue to work on them as I move forward.  So today I wanted to share another fine art piece with you.

As you guys know I’ve been slowly creating and sharing pieces from my self-portrait series that I’m calling The Journey. The series deals with emotions and things that have happened along our road of infertility like hope, strength, anger, sorrow, etc… The many moments that comprise the whole. You can take a peek at all my fine art work features here.

I think one of the most common feelings for women traversing the road of infertility is emptiness. We, as women, are designed to create and grow life within us. But when a woman is hit with infertility she does not have this ability. Suddenly it becomes incredibly clear how very empty you feel. Like there’s this space inside that should filled but iy remains determinedly vacant. I wanted to create something simple that conveyed this poignant feeling

This image obviously has very little composite work, instead just some simple photo manipulations. I used a one light set up for dramatic lighting and shot it on a dark background. I had to digitally drop in expanded versions of the floor and backdrop to fill the image’s space. I added a “hole” with some layering effects and then just had fun with my editing style. I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out. I shot the image in just 15-20 minutes between appointments yesterday and got the image edited this morning while holding Marlee. So pretty happy that I was able to complete another one of these so soon after Marlee’s arrival.

Here’s a sneak peek at the behind the scenes for it:

And the final piece:
