Happy 4th of July!
Good morning friends! I hope today finds you happy, healthy, and spending time with those you love! I also hope that today in between spending time with your loved ones, enjoying food, and watching the fireworks, you will take a few minutes to think on what this day is all about.
On this date in 1776, representatives from all 13 colonies in America voted unanimously to adopt a Declaration of Independence. They drew it up, signed it, and sent it to the King of England. And for 7 long years, we fought – fought for our right to be free from the taxes and policies enforced on us by a King who hindered our own growth and prosperity and ability to live.
Perhaps the most famous line from the Declaration of Independence is . . . .
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights; that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
This one line in our Declaration of Independence has paved the way for every single law on the books today. It holds the basis for our government system and the foundation of the civil rights movement. Unfortunately, over the years, we see once solid lines of right and wrong becoming blurred, and corruption has certainly found its stronghold in our government, which diminishes much of the glow of that dream. But it is within us, the people, where this dream now resides and here is where it can shine the brightest.
So today as you enjoy your picnics and barbecues – when you look upon our flag – that symbol of FREEDOM and Independence – think on what today is really about. Recognize that Americans fought hard, and far too many died, to gain these rights for us and that we have men and women fighting even now, to keep these rights secured. When you see news stories or political debates regarding cases questioning our freedoms – much like the Hobby Lobby case – consider what freedoms our forefathers fought for. They didn’t fight for us to be given anything. It isn’t about giving our government more and more control, or having someone take care of our every need. Freedom isn’t relegated to a select minority – freedom is for everyone. And freedom is the right to make our own choices. Not to have anything forced upon us. Look at all the freedom you have today – in your choice of career, your choice of spouse, your choice of home life. These are freedoms we didn’t have before – that our forefathers fought for us to have. Freedom isn’t a handout… freedom in this country is your right to live a happy life, to work hard, and to find our own way pursuing our own dreams.
