Curly Hair Care

If you’ve seen me, you’ve probably noticed that I have crazy curly hair. I am not one to spend a bunch of time styling myself, let alone trying to tame my mane! But over the years I’ve learned a few tricks on how to take better care of my hair to make sure it stays healthy and looking it’s best! So I made a quick video to share some of these tips, and I’m including some notes below.

Curly Girl Handbook
This book is a must read for anyone with curly hair! And by curly, I mean anything from wavy hair to corkscrew curls! It walks you through figuring out what type of clothes you have and then helps you figure out how to best care for your specific hair.

No Brushing
Brushing is a big no-no when you have curly hair! Curly hair is naturally drier and more porous. So when you brush your hair you were literally ripping apart her hair. Instead you should use your fingers to come through your hair, and if absolutely necessary the white toothed comb.

Sulfate-Free Products
Switching to sulfate free products alone made a massive difference in my hair in a few short weeks! Almost immediately I started to see the moisture returned to my damaged and dried out here and it finally became manageable again! So if you do nothing else switch to sulfate free hair products!

Shampoo Scalp Only
If you have a type of curly hair that requires shampooing, you’ll most likely find that you should really only apply the shampoo to your scalp. This helps clean away the grease and oil from your roots without drying out your ends.

Don’t Wash Hair Everyday
Because most curly hair is dryer, you will find that you don’t have to shampoo your hair every day. I often go two to three days between washing my hair.

Dampen to Refresh Curls
On days that you don’t have to wash your hair, you may find your curls feeling A little less springy. All it takes is a little water to dampen your hair and your curls should spring right back to life!

No Towel Drying
Standard towels are super abrasive to curly hair! It is recommended that you use either a microfiber towel or a T-shirt. Instead of rubbing your hair simply scrunch it within the T-shirts or microfiber towel to pull the moisture out. After doing this I simply let my hair air dry.

Use Spray Gel to Lock in Curls
If your girls have a tendency to fall as the day wears on, you can use some spray gel to help lock in your curls. Simply spritz the hair gel onto damp girls right after you get out of the shower and scrunch them for the best results. Make sure you’re not using actual gel but spray gel because regular gel is too heavy and the way down your curls.

There you have it! It’s a few of my tips for taking better care of your curly hair! I hope you’ve found this helpful and if you have any questions or suggestions leave them in the comments below!
