A Weekend & Some Thoughts…

November 10, 2010

I have gone back and forth on this blog about how open to be. While this is my business blog, I really do share a part of myself with you in every picture and post. So I decided today that I would share some thoughts that have been running through my head.

This past weekend was one of the best weekends I’ve had in a long time. Not only did I get to photograph a beautiful couple who happen to be friends of mine, but we also got to spend an evening with some of the best people I know. In spending all this time with the Rotramel family, it lead me to start thinking about some things.

I decided to look up family in the dictionary to see what the actual definition was. According to the dictionary, family is a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not. I’ll admit I find this definition a little…lack luster. I mean – is that all family is? A group of people connected by blood and blood alone. I don’t know about you, but I personally find this to be a little sad.

And yet I know a lot of families are like this. But this weekend…this weekend was everything a family should be. It was joy. It was laughter. It was openness and honesty. It was acceptance and open-mindedness. It was relaxing, worry-free, and comfortable. I could go on and on.

The point being Ryan and I were with family last weekend. Sure maybe we aren’t blood related, but who cares. We were with people who just “get us”. There was no tension or worry. There was no need to muffle or hide our true selves because in the Rotramel home we are loved for exactly who we are…flaws and all.

I’ve come to the conclusion that there are two types of families. There’s the family that you are born into – your blood relations. And then there’s the family that you choose. Sometimes these two families are one and the same, and that’s great. But some of us get the amazing opportunity to have both. So this weekend I got to hang out with my second family full of amazing people.

So for all of you who talked with us, laughed with us, shared with us, and took care of us on Saturday and Sunday – Thank you!

Stephanie, you are absolutely right! We have the family that we were born into….linked sometimes by blood alone. Then we have those who just get us and accept us regardless of our human flaws…who love us for being ourselves. This last weekend was AMAZING! I am delighted to call the Rotramel's family! What a loving and accepting group of people!
