Choices…

May 20, 2011

Every day we are given the opportunity to make a choice. Actually many choices. When we get up in the morning we choose whether to get up with the alarm or hit the snooze button. We choose what to wear, how to do our hair and make-up, whether or not to eat breakfast. There are any multitude of choices set before us in any given day, whether we recognize the decision we are making or not.

The ability to choose… It’s what sets us apart as humans from other animals – Our higher intellect and our decision making abilities. Yet these days we have so many choices set out before us that we may find it difficult to make a decision or to determine which course of action to take.

Here’s just one simple example. Look at your local grocery store. How many options do you have set out before you? Heck, how many aisles are there in the store? I know our little IGA has one whole aisle dedicated solely to cereal. It’s funny that something as simple as nourishing our bodies has become such a complex matter when people used to simple eat what the land provided them. This is just one example of many that have arisen in our current times that increase the number and complexity of the decisions we have to make.

Not that life should be easy, but sometimes I feel like we over-complicate our lives. Why do we “need” all these things? Why do we place such importance on technology or having name brand products? Shouldn’t there be more focus placed on the good and simple things in this world that make it so perfect… so beautiful?

How magnificent would it be to take one day and just do nothing. No schedules. No agendas. Just one whole day filled with spontaneity. A day set aside to make decisions that are centered around what makes you happy and what you want. Not influenced by anyone else. Maybe you choose to spend it pampering yourself or maybe you spend it doting on your loved ones. How perfect would that day be? What would you do?

So why? Why don’t we do this more often? Is money really that important? Is being busy that important? Are you going to look back on your life 20, 30, 40 years from now and think. “Gosh! I wish I had made more money!” or “Why didn’t I stress myself out with more activities?”

Honestly, I think we forget that we have a choice. We get so wrapped up in our routine… so comfortable with the familiar that we forget we can make a change any time we want to. Rather than dreading my long to-do list, I can wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and say, “Hey Gorgeous! Today is going to be awesome! Enjoy it!” I can make a point to focus on the positive and minimize negative influences. I can choose to simplify my life… buy less processed foods, learn to do and make things myself, cut back on driving whenever possible, …

Choice… It’s a wonderful gift we’ve been given, and something I’m constantly reminding myself to focus on. To make conscious decisions. Ones that make me happy. Ones that fill me with joy. Ones that I won’t regret.

What decisions are you making? Are there some you’d like to work on? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
