A Haircut and Trust

February 11, 2011

Yesterday was one of my much loved hair appointment days. **sigh** I look forward to going to Studio 7 every couple months or so to get my hair done. It doesn’t matter how stressed out I feel or what’s going on in my life, I always walk out of the salon feeling much more calm, put together, and gorgeous. (Thanks Molly!)

I always get my hair cut and styled and I just tell Molly to do whatever she wants. I completely trust her! She is awesome! And when my hair is all finished I look in the mirror and wonder how the heck she did it. I watch her do it, but I’ve gone home and tried to do it myself and it never turns out…at all.

I’ve had some bad haircuts in my life, but let me tell ya – there is nothing like finding a hairdresser who knows his/her stuff. The first time I came to Molly, I sat down in the chair and she ran her fingers through my hair once – ONCE! And said – “you have naturally curly hair don’t you, and it’s pretty fine.” Ummm…Amazing!!! I’ve never had a hairdresser do that before.

But that got me thinking. Because of that first impression, I completely and utterly trust Molly. I’ll be honest, I don’t know a lot about hair…scratch that – I don’t really know anything about hair. And in all honesty, I don’t really want to spend hours learning how to make my hair look good. Some days I think it would be nice to be better at that sort of thing, but on the whole I just have so many other things I’d rather do. So instead, I rely on an expert (Molly) and I trust her knowledge and skill and know that I’m going to be happy with whatever she does.

This is really the same for photography. Many of you are going to want photos of yourself or your family, but you may not want to take the time to learn everything there is to know to take really awesome photographs. And that’s okay. Instead you’ll call on an expert to help you get images you really love. Someone who knows exactly what they need to do to get amazing lighting and flattering images of you. Someone who has invested time and money into learning about their equipment and staying up-to-date on the latest trends. Someone who knows the best place to get your photos or albums printed where the quality is outstanding.

So I’m sticking to what I know (photography and design), and rely on other professionals to help me with things that aren’t my strong point like taxes, automotive repairs, and hair. I’m going to continue looking forward to going to my expert hairdresser, sitting down in her chair, and saying, “I don’t want to lose a lot of length, but other than that – do whatever you want. I trust you.”
