Tomorrow marks thirteen years… thirteen years since you and I officially became a couple. Some days it feels oh so long ago… But at the same time – I still remember it so clearly… We were so young. I was in high school. You were fresh in college. You were the first guy I really dated…. There was just something about you. You made my heart so happy and I wanted to spend all my time with you.

I remember Valentine’s Day thirteen years ago… I had spent the evening at my sweet friend, Erin’s house for a Valentine Day’s party. I left a little early to get home… I was hoping you’d be online so we could talk… as we so often did over instant messenger. There was a part of me that was really hoping you’d ask me to be your Valentine even though the day was almost over. We talked for a long while. I started asking you a bunch of random questions while I built up the nerve to ask you the one question I really wanted to know the answer to – “Do you like-like anybody?”

It felt like thirteen years passed while I stared at the screen, waiting for your response. Then finally….”What?” I quickly changed the subject “What’s your favorite food?” How did you not know what that meant? Were you just avoiding the question? I didn’t know if I’d have the courage to ask you again. And then it happened…

Thirteen years ago tomorrow you asked me to be your Valentine. I may have only gotten to be your Valentine for 5 minutes that year, but they were the most perfect 5 minutes I had ever known. I didn’t know then that you would become my one and only Valentine, or that I would get to spend every Valentine’s day after that first one with you. But…
